Ayur vs Allo

Blog

BriskHeal being a purely dedicated herbal portal pondered on recent debate and discussion which has created a massive misunderstanding between Ayurveda and Allopathy. We discussed the matter with one of prominent allopathy practitioner, Dr. Bachaspati Dash, MD, who narrated this subject to create a cohesion and synergy between both the streams and not to think in-terms of superiority or inferiority angle. Let’s understand his prospective on topics.

SYNERGY BETWEEN MODERN (ALLOPATHIC) AND AYURVEDA

Contrary to the believe modern medicine cannot be combined with Ayurveda, many studied have proved that they can work better together or former followed with later. As acute conditions and emergencies better treated with allopathy and chronic conditions better cared in Ayurveda with lesser side effects.

The main reason behind such antagonism is arising out of the egos of doctors in respective fields. The recent battle between IMA and Swamy Ramdev is best example. Both are having their shortcomings. Modern medicine has no cure for most of the chronic diseases (only symptomatic management), whereas Ayurveda find it difficult to manage emergencies and critical cases.

But both work under similar principles, unlike Homeopathy. Both believe in drugs working on human systems on a dose related basis. In fact, some of the allopathic medicines are derived from herbs like reserpine from rawolfia serpentina and vaccine from adhatoda vasica.

Allopathic medicines mainly work symptomatically whereas Ayurveda is supposed to go the roots of the problem. Infections and infestations are better managed. Acute and critical cases also best managed with the support of life saving injections and gadgets and better diagnostic methods of pathology and imaging. But the adverse effects of medicines especially on a long-term use makes at time unacceptable.

Ayurveda promises less adverse effects, suited for long term therapies is a better option but backing with better diagnostic and use of modern gadgets is needed. Much research is needed to establish the safety and efficacy of the drugs which are less established or clinically proven. It also boasts of treating at the root causes of tridosha imbalance that are vata, pitta and kafa. Modern researchers also say that we have go beyond symptomatic treatment as mind and body work in synergy and all systems and organs are interrelated.

For our best benefit we can use both therapies along with other therapies like yoga and naturopathy, if judiciously prescribed by experts who have in depth knowledge in their respective fields.

Hope the prospective narrated going to settle this debate in our reader’s mind. We all need to debate and discuss the benefits and limitations. After all we are doctors and our objective is to treat mankind with best possible drugs available for various ailment.
